Chapter Twenty-Three

Danger

We got lucky finding a drainage ditch that would allow us to get closer to the warehouse without having to cross so much empty pavement. We’d had to leave our bikes a few blocks away since there wasn’t anywhere to hide them or the noise they made, and we’d left Jackson to watch over them. I’d been surprised he’d wanted to come at all, and while he’d argued about staying with the bikes, a whispered conversation with Sebastian had convinced him. The others were still slinking along the fence, waiting until they got behind one of the smaller buildings to climb it, while I was already belly deep in muddy water and garbage.

My lips pulled up, whiskers bristling over the stench of what I was walking through. The mud squishing between my toes kept making me gag, and I had to fight the sensation to keep going, my tail lashing behind me in agitation.

I usually let my consciousness sink deeper when I was shifted, but I had to stay in control this time. I’d expected the animal part of me to fight it, but the only thing that side wanted right now was to get out of the disgustingness as soon as possible.

The ditch ended with a grassy rise up to the pavement. I didn’t have a lot of space, but I did my best to rub the worst of the mess off my fur. Wet prints I could hope would evaporate before they were seen, but mud would remain even after it dried.

The parking area had a scattering of lights shining down on it, and I could only assume there were cameras trained on the lot. So far we hadn’t seen or heard any patrols, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t someone watching. Being dark helped blend into shadows but didn’t do much for crossing lit pavement. I had my phone in my mouth, but it wasn’t like I could call the guys and tell them to give me a distraction without shifting first and possibly drawing attention with my pale flesh on the grass.

Sighing, I crouched and prepared to make a dash for the safety of the shadows against the building. My heart pounded in my chest but I didn’t let it distract me, knowing every second I wasted was another second that heinous things could be done to Charity’s sister.

A growl crawled up my throat and I used the burst of anger to push me across the space between me and my goal. I stayed low to the ground, running as fast as I could and hoping if anyone noticed a streak of darkness, they’d find an excuse to explain it. I’d never seen a six-foot-long, two-hundred-something pound raccoon, but stranger things had been found in cities.

I didn’t let myself stop once I reached the building. I still needed to get inside without being seen, and the sooner I did, the sooner I could let the guys know what we were up against.

Turning at the end of the building, I prowled forward, searching for a way in.
